Alaska Dall Sheep Survey Being Conducted

The Alaska Board of Game has requested a scientific survey be conducted among resident and nonresident sheep hunters, guides, and transporters, to get a better idea of what problems are happening afield and how to address them. 3,300 resident and nonresident sheep hunters began getting the survey card in the mail in late May. The survey can be done online using the code on the survey card.

AK BHA has pushed hard for several Board of Game (BOG) cycles now for changes to address unlimited guiding and unlimited nonresident sheep hunting opportunity in interior Alaska, where in some units guided nonresident sheep hunters take 60-80% of the Dall sheep harvest each year. This kind of continued unlimited pressure is harming our sheep populations and making it harder to find a legal ram. We have twice submitted proposals to the BOG asking that all nonresident sheep hunters go to draw-only hunts with a limited allocation. In February, the BOG deferred our sheep proposal and other proposals to address these issues to next year's meeting in Anchorage, awaiting the results of the sheep survey.
