The following is directed at hunters who are not mobility impaired. It is recognized that people who are mobility impaired need, deserve, and must be given the opportunity to enjoy hunting.
Hunting is a rigorous activity. One advantage animals have is that they are perfectly attuned to the terrain and cover that protects and provides for them. Unfortunately, most humans are strangers to wild places. Today's hunter has to learn how to function in wild country. A hefty effort is required whether you tramp through briar thickets in pursuit of cottontail rabbits or scale stony peaks in search of a mountain goat. There are physical demands to hunting; they are part of hunting....
It is almost a certainty that each of us will need a machine to get to where we will hunt. However, once we get there, we must separate ourselves from the high technology world and become hunters. It is the ethical choice. Physical capabilities differ; you should evaluate yours honestly and select a hunting challenge within your ability and condition.
If you are prepared physically, you are more likely to make the right ethical choice when afield. You will also be healthier and will probably enjoy a fuller life.
There will come a time, however, when each of us must face an inevitable truth and accept personal physical limits. For all of us, wear, tear, and time will dictate that we accept limitations. It will be a phase in live to savor patiently hunting squirrels in a rural woodlot and be content with memories of stalking bighorn sheep among eagles. This will be a time to show a new facet of personal nobility by saying no to proposals to access wild country with roads even though our own time to be there may have passed. It is a commitment that we owe the hunters of tomorrow…if hunters are to have a tomorrow.
